Codex Alimentarius Alert
by Dr. Terry Grossman - Medical Director – Frontier Medical Institute

On July 4th the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC), which has been meeting in Rome, adopted in final form their Guidelines for Vitamin, Mineral and Food Supplements. It is significant that the commission spent a full five minutes in discussion before ratifying these guidelines which will affect the health of hundreds of millions, if not billions, of people around the globe. They then went on to spend two and a half hours discussing regulations and standards for Parmesan cheese.

Despite this onerous and misguided ruling, there is no IMMEDIATE threat to your ability to buy nutritional supplements in the U.S. The Dietary Safety Health Education Act (DSHEA) passed by Congress in 1994 has been safeguarding the rights of Americans to buy and use nutritional supplements freely and at competitive prices.

Without massive public outcry, most vitamins and supplements will become prescription drugs and your freedom to purchase and use nutritional supplements to ensure the health of yourself and your family will be seriously eroded. We must let our elected officials know that we want DSHEA to remain in effect and that the U.S. will not be forced to follow the Codex guidelines.

To learn more about Codex Alimentarius, I encourage you to visit Dr. Rima Laibow’s Health Freedom USA web site. Dr. Laibow went to Rome to report on the CAC actions firsthand.

Study Misreports Effectiveness of Vitamin C
by Emma Young – NewScientist.com

An article published by NewScientist.com on June 28, 2005 begins "Regular doses of vitamin C will not prevent a cold in most people - though they might reduce its duration slightly, according to a major new review of existing research" and ends "As well as considering the effect of regular daily does, the pair also looked at whether starting to take vitamin C as soon as a symptoms appeared could shorten a cold. They found no evidence that it could, except for in one study which involved a huge 8 gram dose on the first day of symptoms."

Dr. Grossman's Comments:
This study is typical of how research scientists misinterpret their own data and draw completely flawed conclusions. The researchers noted that if patients were to take 8 grams of vitamin C the first day they noticed cold symptoms, they could affect the duration and severity of the illness. Rather than using this as the starting point for their further research and finding out what would happen if people were to take more than 8 g of vitamin C or 8 g every day while they were ill, they simply concluded that small ineffectual doses were, well, ineffectual.

Vitamin C is remarkably nontoxic. At our clinic here in Denver, we recommend that patients take “bowel tolerance” doses of vitamin C when they are sick. A bowel tolerance dose of vitamin C is the largest amount of vitamin C that can be taken without having any gastrointestinal side effects such as cramping or diarrhea. The BT of vitamin C is quite different from individual to individual, and also various with the health status of the individual. One person might have a baseline BT dose of 2 grams, while another individual has a baseline BT dose of 6 g. In addition, the individual who needs only 2 g while healthy may need 12 g when sick. The scientists in this study had a golden opportunity to use the 8 g that they found had some value as the springboard for further research. Instead, they simply chose to denigrate it as a “huge” dose.

All of this may well be moot if the Codex Alimentarius is passed in the U.S. Preliminary research suggests that the largest dose of vitamin C that would be allowed over-the-counter would be about 200 mg per capsule. To take a BT dose of 8 g would require 40 capsules per day – both impractical and unaffordable.

Fetal Stem Cell Injections Help Heart Failure Patients
by Kristen Philipkoski – WiredNews.com

Ten heart failure patients received fetal stem cell injections in Ecuador and have all showed signs of improvement during the first three months after the treatment. This is the the first time doctors have performed this procedure.

Dr. Grossman's Comments:
Congestive heart failure (CHF) remains a major killer and affects one in 15 people over 75 years of age. Life expectancy after diagnosis is only 2-3 years, and it is estimated that heart disease results in an average of 11 years loss of life. Developing an effective treatment for heart failure is a critical component of life extension.

This study from Ecuador found that embryonic stem cells were better at helping patients with CHF than other types of stem cells, such as those taken from ublilical cord blood. Despite the federal ban on embryonic stem cell research in the U.S., such research is moving forward rapidly elsewhere in the world.

Antibiotics of Little Use In Bronhcitis
by Paul Little, MD - et al.

Acute bronchitis is the most common condition treated by primary care physicians. Most physicians prescribe antibiotics, although there appears to be little benefit in outcome whether antibiotics are used or not.

Dr. Grossman's Comments:
There are many potholes in the conventional medicine approach to disease. The overprescribing of antibiotics is a significant problem, which has led to the emergence of multiple antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains. Staphylococcus is a key example, and one species of staph, MRSA or methicillin-resistant staph aureus, has developed reisitance to almost all antibiotics known.

Previous studies have shown that antibiotics are rarely needed in the treatment of colds or ear infections. Colds, ear infections and bronchitis constitute a significant percentage of the visits made to family physicians and pediatricians. If doctors were to follow the guidelines properly, patients would leave their offices without an antibiotic prescription. Ultimately, patients will stop visiting doctors for these types of respiratory infections. In the long run, this will prove better for the cost of medical care, drug-resistant bacteria and the patients themselves.

Testosterone Shown to Improve Sexual Desire in Women
by JE Buster, SA Kingsberg - et al – Baylor College of Medicine

A study from Baylor found, "In surgically menopausal women with hypoactive sexual desire disorder, a 300 mug/d testosterone patch significantly increased satisfying sexual activity and sexual desire, while decreasing personal distress, and was well tolerated through up to 24 weeks of use."

Dr. Grossman's Comments:

Testosterone patches have been approved by FDA for use in men, but not yet in women. Many women experience decrease in libido and other sexual complaints after menopause. These problems can often be helped by testosterone supplementation.

Even though testosterone patches are not available commercially for women yet, it is possible to have your physician write a prescription for topical testosterone cream or gel, which can be filled at a compounding pharmacy. If your physician is unfamiliar with this medication or won't prescribe testosterone for you, another option is to arrange for a telephone consult with one of our practitioners at Frontier Medical Institute. For further information, please call Ardis at (303) 233-4247.

Large Study Confirms that Mediterranean Diet Reduces Mortality
by A. Trichopoulou - et al – University of Athens Medical School

A study of elderly people in Europe has shown a statistically significant 8 percent decrease in overall mortality as a result of eating a modified Mediterranean diet. The study included 74,607 healthy people over 60 years of age from nine European countries. The best results were seen in Spain and Greece.

Dr. Grossman's Comments:
We strongly advocate the Mediterranean diet in our book, Fantastic Voyage: Live Long Enough to Live Forever. Here is scientific corroboration of the life extending value of this diet. This multicenter trial included almost 75,000 individuals from Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. The main characteristics of the Mediterranean diet include a high intake of vegetables, legumes, fruits, and cereals (ideally unrefined); several servings a week of fish; a low intake of saturated fats, but relatively large amounts of polyunsaturated fats, particularly olive oil; a low to moderate intake of dairy products, mostly cheese and yogurt; a low intake of meat; and a modest intake of alcohol, mostly as wine.

Plant-based diet lowers cholesterol more than standard low fat diet
by CD Gardner, A Coulston - et al – Stanford University Medical School

In a study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, researchers found that a diet which emphasized nutrient-dense plant-based foods, consistent with recently revised national guidelines, increased the total and LDL cholesterol-lowering effect of a low-fat diet even further.

Dr. Grossman's Comments:
I remain convinced that there are no healthier foods than vegetables. In addition to being extremely low in saturated fat, they are packed with vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. When planning meals, a simple method is to divide your plate into thirds. Fill 2 thirds with vegetable foods. For example, equal portions of salad, a cooked vegetable and protein (fish, skinless poultry, lean red meat) constitutes a healthful meal.

Tips for Healthy Grilling
by Karen Collins, R.D. – MSNBC.com

Many Americans still do not know that grilling can be unhealthy. The cancer risk from grilling, however, is real, but it changes dramatically with what you grill and how you do it.

Dr. Grossman's Comments:
The problem with traditional grilling comes from the combination of meat with intense heat. Whether you are using red meat, poultry or seafood, substances in the muscle proteins of these foods react under high heat to form carcinogenic compounds called heterocyclic amines (HCAs). HCAs can damage the DNA of our genes, beginning the process of cancer development.

One of the joys of summer is the outdoor barbeque. Yet when animal products are grilled, carcinogenic heterocyclic amines (HCAs) can be produced. The risk of precancerous colon polyps is doubled in people who each the most barbecued foods.

Some simple changes can reduce your risk:
  1. Use marinades (can reduce HCAs 96 per cent)
  2. Cook at lower temperatures by turning the gas down or raising the grill
  3. Flip food every minute
  4. Trim fat so that there is no dripping and open flames
  5. Eat meat when it is rare or medium rare

Use Your Computer as a Phone - Call Anywhere in the World for Pennies a Minute
by Dr. Terry Grossman - Medical Director – Frontier Medical Institute

Skype is a new type of phone service that allows you to use your computer as a telephone. I downloaded the software in about a minute and have been using it for my phone consults with patients around the country and the world. You speak into your computer's microphone and the voice of the person you’re speaking to comes out your computer’s speaker. Telephone charges are very reasonable – less than 2 cents a minute for anywhere in the U.S. and many locations in Europe and only a few pennies a minute more to Japan and Asia. Even better, if both you and the person you are calling both have downloaded the Skype service on both of your computers, the call is free to both of you. The sound quality is excellent and you prepay for your service by purchasing 10 Euros ($12) worth of service in advance, which you then have 180 days to use.
